Obituary

Charles O. Hewitt Sr. 80, of Winterhaven Florida & Oswego NY passed away peacefully Saturday, July 8th under the care of Good Shepherd Hospice House, Lakeland Florida after a short illness. 

 

Born in Gouverneur NY on August 30th, 1942 to James O. & Lena M. Hewitt the family later moved to Oswego. He attended Oswego schools & served in the US Army as a MP stationed in Germany from September 1959 until his discharge in October of 1961. After returning home he held many small construction and/or maintenance jobs settling in with Local Union 214, and he retired from the James A Fitzpatrick Plant as the Building & Grounds Maintenance Supervisor. 

 

After a two-week courtship, he married Lynda M Whiting on September 12, 1964, at St.Louis Church in Oswego. Raising their family in Scriba where he remained until August 2020 when he sold the family home moving to Florida permanently. Spending most of his adult life in Scriba, he was a volunteer for the Scriba Volunteer Fire Department & as a Special Deputy with the Oswego County Sheriffs Department.  After retirement, he kept busy as a seasonal employee with the Town of Scriba maintaining recreational areas as well as local cemeteries taking personal pride in the appearance of each. 

 

Charlie or Chuck, as most knew him, was known by many, each having their own memories to cherish. He was creative with crafts, making wooden lawn ornaments, recycled tinmen & silverware wind chimes, and his special spindle snowmen. He deeply enjoyed karaoke, spending time with family & friends often hosting memorable occasions. He volunteered annually at many holiday events as Santa giving each child a gift as they sat upon his lap fully believing he was SANTA.  He will be missed by many. 

 

He was predeceased by his wife Lynda; his daughters Fawn & Tamara (Pooh); his siblings Ronald, Marian, Richard, Robert, Arlene, and Arthur; his parents James & Lena; and grandchildren Gary Lee & Natalee Joan. 

 

He is survived by his children Brian (Jen) of Lowville, Bruce (Brenda) of Oswego, Charles Jr. (Tracey) of Wyoming & April (Bob) of Florida. Sisters; Carol of Lowville; Jeanette of Massachusetts & Diane of Syracuse. Twenty grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews cousins, and friends.

 

Keeping with his wishes there will be no services or calling hours. Burial will be in St. Peter’s cemetery at a time determined by the family. 

 

Donations in his memory may be made to the Good Shepherd Hospice House of Lakeland Florida (link provided), a local hospice organization, or a charity of one’s choice.
