Viola I. Boardway left this earthly world to live in eternal peace with her husband Richard, son Fred, and grandson Adam on June 3rd, 2018.
Born in Oswego on November 6, 1927, she was the daughter of Richard and Flavia (Allen)Guernsey.
Viola graduated from the Oswego High School in 1945, met and married Richard J. Boardway,
and had five children – Carol (Michael) Fitzsimmons of Oswego; Richard David (Sandra) of Mineral, VA;
Frederick; Alan (Kathleen) of Penfield, NY; and Anne (Mark) Backer of Oswego.
Viola was an exceptional seamstress creating prize winning quilts, bridal and formal attire, and other handcrafted items, as well as doing alterations at home and for the MJ McDonald’s and Shapiro’s Clothing Stores.
Viola began her working career at the Montgomery Wards Catalog Store in Oswego where she
met Richard shortly after his return from the War. She also worked as a Postal Clerk at the Minetto Post
Office, Aid at St. Luke’s Health Related Facility, and for Co-operative Extension as an instructor and regional coordinator with the 4-H program.
She was a member of the Fulton Garden Club, Lake Country Quilt Guild, RSVP and Harborfest volunteer, and member, volunteer, and Past President of the Oswego Hospital Auxiliary.
Viola was a communicant of the Hall Newman Center.
She is survived by four of her five children, six grandchildren – Rebecca and Matthew Fitzsimmons, Rene’ Blanding, Kyle Backer, Megan Scouten, Kaden Boardway, and one great-grandchild, Kaius Scouten.
Funeral Services will be held at 10am on June 25 th at the Hall Newman Center with internment at Riverside Cemetery.
