Mariano Galletta Obituary

Mariano Galletta, age 98, passed away peacefully on June 28th.  He was born on August 29, 1920 in Oswego, NY to Anthony and Frances (Russo) Galletta, as one of six brothers and sisters: John, Angelo, Joseph, Mary (Lapetino) and Frances (Archambo). He was a graduate of the Oswego High School.

Mariano served in the US Air Force during WWII as a trained B-17 pilot and waist gunner of the 390th Bombardment Group.  He flew 35 strategic combat missions throughout Europe carrying critical supplies and ammunitions to occupied allied territories.

After his military service, Mariano worked for 35 years with the US Postal Service from where he retired.

Mariano lived a full life true to his Italian heritage, large extended family and Catholic faith.       

Mariano enjoyed gardening, hunting, and being an active member of his community. 

Most of all, Mariano loved being active in the lives of all his nieces and nephews.

Mariano is survived by his nephew, Anthony (Brenda) Lapetino, with whom he had a special father-son like relationship throughout his lifetime.  Also surviving are his nephews: Robert Archambo (Stephanie) of West Monroe, Jerry, Gene, John, Tom (Theresa) Galletta, James and Peter (Amy) Galletta of Oswego; Joseph (Shona) Galletta of Kent; Vincent (Kathy) Galletta of Buffalo; his Nieces: Mary Anne (Wesley) Stevens of Oswego, Teresa (Michael) Ferlito of Minetto; Kathy (Terry) Kinney and Tammy Dishaw of Fulton, Ann Marie (John) Schaefer of Liverpool, and Nancy (Jim) Falanga of Palmyra.  He was predeceased by nephews Ronnie and Paul Galletta of Oswego.

Mariano is also survived by his brother-in-law, Robert Archambo of Phoenix, NY and W. Melbourne, Fl.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11:30 from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 240 W 1st St., Oswego.
There are no calling hours  Burial will be at St. Paul’s Cemetery, Oswego.
