Don Richardson Obituary

Don Richardson, 89, a resident of Fair Haven and Bishop’s Commons, passed away
peacefully on December 11 th , 2018.
He was the son of Raymond and Dora (Sours) Richardson. He received his B. S.
Degree in History from Hobart College, Master’s Degree from Syracuse University
and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He was the principal of Valhalla High School
in Westchester, County, N.Y. for over 30 years.
Don contributed many years as President of the Sterling Historical Society. Local
readers of the Lakeshore News remember his weekly columns, “Tales of Sterling”,
chronicling the history of the area. To commemorate Don’s decades of service, the
Sterling Historical Society named the classroom in the Little Red Schoolhouse
Museum after him.
A long time energy conservationist, Don’s home in Fair Haven was equipped with a
geothermal heat pump to avoid burning polluting fossil fuels. A naturalist at heart,
Don pioneered a popular self-guided electric boat nature tour of Sterling Creek
called “Muskrat Ramble” administered by Fair Haven Beach State Park.
Surviving are his daughter, Raejean Fellows of San Diego, two grandsons, Ian and
Chris, four great grand children, his sister, Eleanor Aberth and nieces, Linda, Sandy,
